Our 1 year anniversary

Well thank God this year’s gift is paper because finances when you first start a life together are less than ideal.

Have you ever heard of the Gifts by Year list? I didn’t know anything about it until my grandmother mentioned it to me a while back. If you’re like me and didn’t know there was even such a thing, you can click here to see what it’s all about. I can’t wait until year 6… candy.

Anyways… one whole year married! We had an unconventional, laid back wedding, in my parent’s garage to be exact. The ceremony was on the 24th of September while we signed the legal papers on the 31st of October. Odd, I know, but Halloween has been our dating anniversary for years… in fact, this year will be the 10th. Yes, you read that correctly, TEN years!

And before you’re like “Awh… high school (actually middle school) sweethearts…” I’m going to be honest and say that we had a seriously unhealthy relationship all the way up until probably the last 2 years. Did we love each other through it all? Absolutely, but there were many times that it just wasn’t enough.

What changed you might ask? How did we end up where we are now? I would be delighted to fill you in – it was church.

The moment we decided to put God at the center of our relationship, was the moment that things began to change for the better. Happier, stronger versions of ourselves. This decision to put God first has not been an overnight occurrence and we will continue to work at it for the rest of our lives but pursuing our faith has brought us closer than ever.

No, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows and anyone that tells you that they’re happy 24/7 is a liar but I can truly say this is the strongest our relationship has been. I am so thankful that our (once twisted) love for each other has somehow led us to this place we’re at right now. A place filled with God’s grace, two beautiful babies, a sassy puppy, jobs, a home to call our own, fun vacations, loving families, and an overall abundance of blessings. Though our marriage has also been filled with trials, like the loss of my dear papa and my beloved fur baby, I’ll never have to face them alone. For that, I am beyond thankful that I have TJ as my husband.

The closer that we move towards God is the closer that we move towards each other.

I’ve married a strong and gentle provider, a hard worker, a very forgiving, loving man. I’m lucky to have such a faithful lover and friend. I’m anxious and excited to see what this next year has in store for us!

As for today, we went to a yummy breakfast with our girls, attended church, took a nap, then we dropped the kids off with my mom and dad, came back to a quiet home and indulged in pizza, ice cream and an uninterrupted movie. It was a perfect day.
